Week 8: Carried by the Breeze

Hello friends,
This week’s effort is a little ditty called ‘Carried by the Breeze’. As with a lot of my songs, the guitar part came first, and suggested a feeling of effortlessness. Lyrics were reasonably obliging and the song shaped itself to be about the kind of person/people who seem to float through life, happily and successfully without ever seeming to have to make important decisions. A hint of envy, a hint of awe. A whole lot of fiction, perhaps. Anyway, here it is!

I watched you close your hand

On a seed carried by the breeze

I wondered how it all comes

So effortlessly

Ebb and flow

You come and go

Wax and wane

Oh your song is still the same

Oh, to live life as a dance

Like a leaf carried on a stream

In harmony with everything you see

Oh you are living in a dream

And all that you need

Seems to fall right into your hands

You say you don’t know what you want

But the next day you’ve got it planned

Cos it’s easy

Ebb and flow

You come and go

Wax and wane

Oh your song is still the same

I watched you close your hand

On a seed carried by the breeze

PS – is there anyone out there in Salem, Oregon? I’m playing my first ever show there on Saturday June 7th at the Triangle Inn… come and say hello if you’re in the area! I’ll be sharing the show with Patrick Joseph, on tour from LA.

Week 3: Saharan Rain

Hello friends!
Here’s Week 3’s instalment of One Song A Week. About a month ago there was that strange phenomenon of Saharan dust being deposited across Europe by a strange combination of weather systems – it really captured my imagination (even though pictures of dusty cars posted by various “news” sites were positively uninspiring). I had a lot of fun building up the arrangement (perhaps you can tell…?)
Enjoy!

PS – Portlanders and Oregonians, I have a couple of performances coming up this week.  On Friday lunchtime I’ll be at Oregon Convention Center playing at the Ceramics Showcase.  I’m glad they asked me to play again this year, as I broke one of my favourite mugs a few weeks ago, it’ll be the perfect opportunity to get a new one :)

On Saturday I’ll be at the White Bird Gallery at Cannon Beach for the annual Spring Unveiling festival.  Last year the weather was amazing and it looks like we’re in for some more warm weather, so if you fancy a day at the coast come and stop by!  I’ll play from 5 – 7pm.

More details for both events can be found on the shows page.

Oh the rain brought something strange last night
Golden dust on my windows
Something in the air had changed last night
On a wind from distant lands

Oh the world is getting smaller
And the weather’s getting wilder
And the breeze is picking up
And bringing us
Saharan Rain

Lately I’ve been wondering if it’s true
That everything is intertwined
Something’s got me seeing patterns in things
Where others pay no mind

Oh the world is getting smaller
And the weather’s getting wilder
And the breeze is picking up
And bringing us
Saharan Rain

And if you ask me to explain myself
I’ll find my thoughts will shift like sand
The moment I put any weight on my words
They’ll slip and let me hang

Oh the world is getting smaller
And the weather’s getting wilder
And the breeze is picking up
And bringing us
Saharan Rain
